World War 1 began on the 28th of July 1914 and ended on the 11th of November 1918. World War 1, also known as the Great War, began when the heir to the Austrian-Hungarian Empire was assassinated along with his wife by a Serbian nationalist. On the 4th of August, when Great Britain declared war on Germany, Australia found itself automatically involved in the war.

Allies in World War 1 include France, Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States (The Allies) against Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria (The Central Powers).

World War 1 ended when Germany officially surrendered to the war. After that, the Treaty of Versailles was signed by the nations, formally ending the First World War.

World War 1 resulted in borders being redrawn, empires collapsing, old countries being abolished, and new international organisations forming.
