World War 1 started because of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand the Archduke of Austria. Throughout Europe there were many alliances. Because of the alliances the majority of europe was brought into the war. The US was trying to stay out of the war but when german U-boat began sinking American merchant and passenger ships America joined. World War 1 was the first war to really use planes as weapons.
