From 1910- the 1970s indigenous Australian children were forcibly taken away from their families and homes. The government assumed that these children would live better live with white families than their own indigenous families. These children were taken to institution camps and threatened not to speak their language and forced believe in different things. It was unlikely these children would see their families again. The government thought if they kept marrying Indigenous Australians with white people the “colour” would fade from their skin overtime. Some of the children who were stolen and their families are now mentally scarred. These children are now known collectively as The Stolen Generations.
