During this period many newly invented machines replaced manual labour.
Farmers that could afford the machinery, usually those who owned large farms, were able to work more land and become richer. But those who could not afford the technologies could not compete with those who could and often struggled financially and moved to cities to find work.
Many factories began utilizing machines, which create products for a lower price - allowing the owners of the factories to become more wealthy and gain more profit. But because there were no laws about minimum wage at the time, many workers within the factories were struggling financially. These workers were being paged an average of $32 per month when the cost of living for a family of five was $48 dollars per month.
This period also advanced the types of transportation being used. Horse-drawn streetcars were replaced with electric streetcars, gas-powered automobiles were invented. Because of these inventions people were able to travel distances faster and live farther from where they work, causing cities to become more spread out. But they were quite expensive and cost about $650 while the average worker in 1905 made about $375 a year.
During the industrial period women often worked in factories and in 1891, women made up 34% of the manufacturing workforce in Ontario. They took up jobs such as telephone operators, secretaries, servants and factory workers and jobs within the fashion industry.
Children also contributed to the workforce. They would be hired for cheap labor with an average weekly (in Montreal in 1897) for girls $4.50 and for boys $3.00 while the average man made $8.75. But because of the taxing work and strain on the children, investigations were conducted and they led to stricter laws about child labor.
The industrial period segregated society and created clear lines between the different class of society.
