Supported by former President, Thomas Jefferson, as the Democratic-Republican party candidate, President Monroe assumed the presidency in 1808. The lingering European issues that had been evident during Jefferson's second term influenced the issues Madison faced. Similar to Jefferson, he attempted a fusion of diplomacy and economic pressure to face the Napoleonic wars. Madison finally consented to take the U.S into war. Under the administration, the nation faced economic hardship which in attempt to aid the issue turned to foreign affairs opening trading with all nations except Britain and France which affected ultimately played a role to the upcoming war between Britain and the U.S. But consequently, as the British continued its naval blockade limiting European goods postwar the U.S resorted to move toward industrial self-suffiency. As President Madison became reelected as president serving a second term, it became viewed by critics the U.S involvement in the War of 1812 as "Madison's War" and the influence of war hawks. Yet, the outcome of President Madison approving the nation's involvement led to an increased of nationalism and respect from other nations. He left office and was succeeded by James Monroe.
