This is what the left called the next two years. It translates to “black years”. It refers to the period of time after the November 1933 elections where the right wing took over the government and began to undo all of the reforms that the previous left wing government had attempted to implement. For example, landowners ignored all agrarian policies that had previously been enforced, anticlerical actions were ended, all political action against the Church went unenforced, and Catalonia lost much of its autonomy. More specifically, religious schooling was allowed to continue, peasants were evicted from land and it was returned to the landowners, and the laws that protected industrial and agricultural workers were repealed. This was significant because the reforms were actually undone, as CEDA had the funding to undo everything the left struggled to do.
