- Has some success in converting, but not many
- Runs into issues from the Catholic Papacy in 
  trying to “alter” Catholicism in order to explain 
  and teach it to the Chinese
    > Idea of ancestor worshipping was 
       problematic 
    > Ceremonies in honor of Confucius were 
       thought of as purely wrong by Papacy
    > Translation of the word “God”
