Due to the extravagance of King James I and Charles I, tension had grown between parliament and monarchy, and this boiled over when Charles I decided to become total ruler for eleven years. Eventually, civil war broke out between Royalists, or Cavaliers, and Parliamentarians, or Roundheads.
