Within 24 hours the communist controlled more than 100 south Vietnamese cities and military US bases and even the US embassy in Saigon. This lasted for 3 weeks until the US and South Vietnamese forces are able to push the communist back. This was the turning point of the war becaus ethe US lost hope.
