Joseph R. McCarthy was a senator from Wisconsin. He increased American's fears, claiming he had a list of communists that were in the State Department, although he could never stick to the same names or figures. McCarthyism became a catchword for his vicious style of reckless manner. His targets grew bigger then in 1954, he went towards the Army, as viewers saw him badger witnesses and lie during hearings. His strongest supporters left him. With the end of the Korean War in 1953, his downfall came in 1954, ending the Red Scare.
