It is a general designation of the southern and Northern Dynasties. The southern and Northern Dynasties is a period of great division in Chinese history, and also a period of great national integration in Chinese history. It inherited the Sixteen Kingdoms of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and then followed the Sui Dynasty.
