The word Renaissance is the French word for rebirth and started around the 14th century. European thinkers, writers, and artists began to look back at the art and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. The Renaissance began in Italy long before it reached Britain in the early 16th century. The Greek and Rome thought and art was rediscovered. Beliefs towards God became less dominating and gently life became more natural and sensual pleasure were no longer as repressed as before. Some of the greatest thinkers, authors, statesmen, scientists, and artists in human history thrived during this era, while global exploration opened up new lands and cultures to European industries.

During the Renaissance a new view of man emerged. In the 1300s, a cultural movement called humanism began to gain momentum in Italy. Among its many principles began to support the ideas of humanism that man was the center of his own universe and people should embrace human achievements in education, classical art, literature and science. The individual became important and people began to believe in man's own ability, which led to the church becoming questioned and also losing part of its power.
