A wealthy French merchant who founded the Waldensian movement. He took to a life of wandering poverty and preaching, living on charity in emulation of Jesus's life on Earth.
The Church did NOT support them
1. "Poor" preaching challenged Church authority and wealth
2. Waldensians translated the bible into vernacular, the peoples' spoken language(the Church viewed Latin as the only valid language for the Bible)
3. Argued the Church's priests were not true priests.

Circumvented priests' roles, they were giving Eucharist to people and providing other services.

They were excommunicated after Waldo refused the Pope's order to only preach where locally approved.
