As a product of the Cold War, Korea was divided into two separate sovereign states, with the socialist state being in the north, and the capitalist state in the south. However, neither of these leaders saw that the border was permanent and as a result, both Korean states claimed to be the sole leader of all of Korea. This became one of the most destructive proxy wars of the Cold War, with the UN backing South Korea, and the Soviets backing North Korea. There were approximately 3 million war fatalities, destruction of every Korean major city, thousands of massacres on both sides, and North Korea became among the most heavily-bombed countries in history.
