The War of Spanish Succession was between France and the Holy Roman Empire, England, and the Netherlands. Louis XIV was one of three rulers who claimed the right to choose the heir to the Spanish throne after Charles II, the last of the Spanish Habsburgs, died. Louis XIV wanted his oldest son to rule Spain. This prompted England, the Netherlands, and the Holy Roman Empire to declare war on France in 1701 because they didn't like the idea of France and Spain getting so close, and France/Louis XIV having that much influence.
