Western University (1 янв 1881 г. – 1 янв 1943 г.)

Описание:

Founded in 1881, Western University was the first historic African American college west of the Mississippi. Western University held the same caliber of professional, institutional instruction as both Fisk University and Tuskegee (founded in July of 1881). Western consisted of beautifully constructed buildings on a spacious lush campus. Young people came from everywhere to receive essential instruction in a safe community-based educational environment. Western students excelled academically, graduating to become nurses, doctors, lawyers, ministry leaders, state officials, even professional singers, and musicians. The Jackson Jubilee Singers, started by Dean Robert G. Jackson, existed from 1907 to 1940, performing before black and white audiences. Famous artists such as Eva Jessye, Etta Moten Barnett, and Nora Douglas Holt became internationally acclaimed. Western University closed in 1943 when financial support severely declined due to the Great Depression.
