His parents were Joanna of Philip I of Castile. He was married to Isabella of Portugal, which was purely political marriage lasting 13 years. He had four children in this marriage: first-born son Philip II (1527–1598), Maria (1528–1603), Ferdinand, who died in infancy, finally Joan (1535–1573). Before and after his marriage Charles had a number of unofficial relationships that resulted in illegitimate offspring. When he was elected the Holy Roman Emporer he then owned almost all of Western Europe.
