13th Amendment Passed (1865) abolished slavery "except as a punishment for crime."
The Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) stopped all Chinese immigration into the U.S., and was the first law restricting immigration into the U.S.
The Geary Act (1892) renewed the Chinese Exclusion Act and made Chinese people require certificates of identification.
The Magnuson Act (1943) repealed the Chinese Exclusion Act, but Chinese immigrants were still not allowed to own businesses.
The Natural Origins Act (1924) established the first national immigration quotas, mainly targeting Southern and Eastern Europeans, Africans, and Asians.
The Immigration and Nationality Act (1952) abolished racial (and gender) restrictions for immigration but maintained the quota system. Immigrants could also be rejected due to their political beliefs.
The Naturalization Act (1790) provided the first rules in granting national citizenship in the U.S.
The Emergency Quota Act (1921) added numerical restrictions to immigration and established the quota system.
