The beginning of the slave revolt is due to a rumour occurring that the freedom given to those France could also be applied to slaves, letting them now become free citizens, many slaves decided to revolt against their owners who denied knowledge of this. This caused 1000 plantations and 100 white men to be killed.
Slavery was abolished by France if they joined the fight against counter-revolutionaries. This let Toussaint-L'Ouverture join the french Army to fight the Spanish and the British.
Toussaint-L'Ouverture, now the self elected ruler of the island, issued a Constitution. Included was autonomy, no slavery and establishment of him as governor.
