Lincoln's Assassination
13th Amendment is ratified, abolishing slavery in the US. Black Codes are almost immediately enacted to restrict the rights of African Americans.
Civil Rights Act of 1866 is passed granting African American's citizenship and guaranteeing them equal rights. White civilians begin to riot in the South.
Ku Klux Klan is founded to intimidate and harm African Americans, in attempt to "restore white power"
14th Amendment is passed guaranteeing due process and equal protection under the law to African Americans.
