The 19th century saw the emergence of prison as a new, more often used form of punishment. As a response to the decrease in popularity of other more cruel forms of punishemt. Like corporal punishment and the death penalty. Prison was mostly complete solitary confinement.
In the 20th century prison got used more as a form of punishment. But started stopping being only solitary confinement. Emergence of the modern prison stystem.
Before the 19th century prison was barely used as a form of punishment. Instead punishment was in the form of corporal punishment, humuliation and the death penalty.

Period of the Bataafse Republic and incorperation into France. Seperation of powers is installed with courts seperate from the rulling powers.
Post France period. Netherlands go from an kingdom with an absolute king. To a constitutional kingdom with eventually Universal sufferage. Seperation of powers is partly kept and strenghted over time. Everyone is equal before the court.
