Violet Archer Timeline

A short timeline with pictures, videos (of music), links to essays, programs, and documents that state Violet Archer to be an influential composer in the 20th Century.

She has received worldwide acclaim, and has had her 180+ pieces played in 30+ countries. Her music was first heard in Montreal, but was quick to spread to Europe, where it was heard by British Armed forces during World War II. She studied with two renowned composers of the 20th Century (Béla Bartók and Paul Hindemith), and became a member of the Order of Canada for her work and dedication to Canadian Music. She is noted as an astounding educator, to boot, and has held teaching positions at 4 Universities in North America. One of her pieces, 'Jig' is a common teaching piece by the RCM for their Grade 5 Perspectives book, and thusly has become a staple in educating young pianists in Canada.

She was part of institutions that upheld feminist beliefs when such beliefs were not as widespread (like the Montreal Women's Symphony Orchestra at the time of its commencement), and performed with other professional Orchestras both in Canada and the United States.
