FDR DECLARES THE GOOD NEIGHBOR POLICY TOWARDS LATIN AMERICA The U.S. sought to unify the Western Hemisphere by strengthening its relationship with South and Latin America.
HITLER BECOMES THE GERMAN CHANCELLOR The Nazi party gained popularity in Germany and Hitler was appointed chancellor. He immediately begins his plan to strengthen Germany and regain their power from before WWI.
TYDINGS-MCDUFFLE ACT FDR wanted to focus on internal affairs and keep out of Eurasia’s political strife. Since the Philippines was in Asia, FDR decided to grant them their independence after a ten year period.
RECIPROCAL TRADE AGREEMENTS ACT This act gave FDR the power to change tariff rates and negotiate trade agreements without approval from Congress. With this authority, FDR was able to accelerate his plans to restore the US’s economy.
NUREMBURG LAWS A set of Nazi laws that discriminated against the Jewish. These laws provided the framework for the later systematic persecution of Jews.
U.S. NEUTRALITY ACT OF 1935 This act, along with the 3 other Neutrality Acts of the 1930s, were passed to limit U.S. involvement in future wars. These acts mostly achieved this by restricting loans and trade to nations in war.
THE GREAT PURGE / THE GREAT TERROR After Stalin rose to power in the Soviet Union, he felt threatened by the Bolsheviks and Lenin’s former reign and decided to silence his enemies. During this period, he sentenced around a million “traitors” to death.
GERMANY INVADES THE RHINELAND Hitler began his plan to strengthen Germany by violating the terms of the Treaty of Versailles and ordering German troops to march into demilitarized Rhineland. This marked the beginning of his campaign as he went on to invade other European territories.
PANAY INCIDENT A Japanese attack on the American gunboat Panay in Nanking, China. This event nearly caused a declaration of war from the U.S.
JAPAN INVADES CHINA This event marks the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The Japanese were primarily motivated by potential territorial gain.
HITLER SEIZES AUSTRIA German troops marched into Austria to force them to unit with the Nazi government. Austrian chancellor Schuschnigg caved under pressure from Hitler and the Nazis were able to annex Austria without much bloodshed.
THE MUNICH CONFERENCE Hitler continued his campaign to seize more European territories and was fixated on annexing Sudetenland, which had a substantial German population. In order to avoid a repeat of WWI, the other European leaders yielded to Hitler’s demands and he was allowed to take all predominantly German territory in Czechoslovakia.
HITLER SEIZES ALL OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA Instead of annexing solely the Sudetenland, as agreed upon at the Munich Conference, Hitler seized all of Czechoslovakia. This action proved that Hitler had been blatantly lying and drew the end of appeasement as a result.
WWII BEGINS IN EUROPE WITH HITLER'S INVASION OF POLAND Hitler used the ‘blitzkrieg’ strategy of waging war to take over Poland, which he justified by Lebensraum. Russia also invaded Poland, as Russia and Germany’s Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact said that the two countries would attack Poland together and split the land. This action finally prompted Britain and France to declare war on Nazi Germany.
HITLER ATTACKS THE SOVIET UNION (OPERATION BARBAROSSA) This was the surprise Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, its own ally during the invasion of Poland. The attack was initially very effective and surprising to the Soviets despite warnings from the Allied countries.
JAPAN ATTACKS PEARL HARBOR Tensions between the US and Japan slowly built up over the course of WWI as the US tried to stop Japan from expanding. This eventually prompted Japan to bomb Pearl Harbor, where the US had set up its main Pacific naval base. However, Japan failed in destroying oil tanks, ammunition sites, repair facilities, and aircraft carriers.

FALL OF FRANCE / BATTLE OF FRANCE After just six weeks of battle, France surrendered to Germany after suffering heavy losses from Germany’s effective war tactics. After France’s sudden defeat, Britain was in a disadvantageous position, since they were left alone to combat German in Europe.
BATTLE OF BRITAIN This battle took place between the respective air forces of Britain and Germany, which was the first time in history where a battle was fought solely in air. Although Britain lost France as an ally, they were supported by other countries, so that a quarter of their pilots came from foreign countries. They were able to significantly weaken German forces and gave Hitler his first major defeat.
SPANISH CIVIL WAR The Spanish Civil War broke out when General Francisco Franco rallied military officers to overthrow the Republican government. Franco’s supporters, the Nationalists, were afraid that the Republican government would lead to the spread of Marxism. They adopted fascist ideas and Germany and Italy supported Franco as they rebelled against the Republic, which was aided by the USSR. The Republicans eventually surrendered and Franco declared hims
