1669 - German alchemist Hennig Brand discovers phosphorus when trying to make gold from urine. He attempted this by heating boiled urine, and a liquid dropped out and burst into flames. ←Phosphourous
1680 - Robert Boyle also discovers phosphorous and the discovery is made public. ←Robert Boyle
1809 - At least 47 elements are discovered, and scientists begin to see patterns in their properties.
1863 - English chemist John Newlands divides the known 56 elements into 11 groups, based on their characteristics. ← Part of John Newlands' periodic table
1789 - Antoine Lavoisier wrote the "Traité Élémentaire de Chimie" (Elementary Treatise of Chemistry), was considered the first modern textbook about chemistry. It contained a list of "simple substances"; an early periodic table. ←Antoine's table
1869 - Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev started the development of the periodic table, arranging chemical elements by atomic mass. He predicted the discovery of other elements, and left spaces open in his periodic table for them. ←Dmitri Mendeleev
