Introduction of Boxing in the 23rd Olympiad. Fighters often braided their arms 2/3 of the way with soft leather straps called Cetus, they would often filled them with metal. The loser would usually get beaten to death .marking the first dangerous part of the sport that would later get changed to prevent deaths.
Fights often consisted of fighters wearing harder leather armored with copper or iron brackets to beat each other death. An increase in violence in boxing continues and the dangers are escalated with the improvements of their gloves
Bareknuckle fighting became popular. most likely due to the fact that people were able to enjoy the sport without the need of constant death
First recorded boxing match. Boxing has then been more popular within the general public, allowing us to have what we have, record keeping and the fact that people started to care.
James Figg became the first modern world boxing champion which thus generating more popularity towards the sport and having it acknowledged by others
1. Jack Broughton from England became the worlds 2nd heavyweight boxing champion. Jack also created more rules to remove some of the more gorier parts of the sport such as disqualifying a fighter if he hit below the belt, quarreled, cursed or attacked with their legs or head. Fights lasted until one fighter was knocked onto the ground if they were unable to stand up within 8 seconds they would lose if a fighter was unable to continue fighting after their 30-second break they would lose.
1. The Queensberry code of rules was introduced by John Gram, the rules stated it was mandatory to wear padded gloves, rounds lasted for 3 minutes with a 1-minute break. use of anything other than hands was forbidden, those who fell had to stand back up within 10 seconds or it would be considered a loss, and the introduction of weight classes was created.
3. This era consisted mostly of bare fist fights and the introduction of mufflers was later introduced. by having quick break times and end times a winner was decided quicker so that no more harm was done to the recipient, cheap hits were banned to also decrease injuries in other areas. The roped in area also prevented bystanders to get injured during the fight as well as a way to give an area the fighters know to stay in.
2. Padded gloves prevented the injuries of fists as well as serious injuries for the opponent, for a round to last 3 minutes benefited the fighters by allowing it to come to an end when both fighters are incapable of moving on or before one was seriously injured. A 1-minute break was also beneficial in a way that it was enough time for a fighter to recollect.
2. overall this era was a huge step towards ensuring safety in boxing due to what a champion has observed on his journey to the top. The major most key thing in this time period was the introduction of weight classes in that bulkier fighters would not have to beat smaller fighters by introducing this concept smaller bodied fighters had a chance in fights and created a more fair environment.
