After the French were defeated by the Viet Mihn in Vietnam, a conference known as the Geneva Accords was held. In the agreement settled upon there,it was decided that Vietnam be split on the 17th parallel. Communism in the North led by Ho Chi Mihn, and Capitalism in the South led by United States backed Ngo Dihn Diem.
North Vietnam prepares for war by sending thousands of officers into South Vietnam to train guerrilla soldier that the US dubbed the “Vietcong.” It was also at this time that the Ho Chi Mihn trails began their construction.
The United States began carpet spraying the jungles of Vietnam with antifoulants, most notably Agent Orange. Agent Orange was carpet sprayed in mass quantities, but also has long lasting effects on the environment; contaminating soil, crops, and livestock, but also humans; resulting miscarriages, deformation, and life threatening illness.
After realizing Ngo Dihn Diem was a terrible leader, the United States gave its approval of a coup of the South Vietnamese government. It was a success, and Ngo and his brother were arrested and killed. A man named Duong Van Mihn would become the new leader of South Vietnam.
Operation Rolling Thunder was basically the United States bombing North Vietnam and giving it a code name. It had little to no military effect, and very damaging effects on North Vietnamese civilians. This very much fueled anti-war protest.
The US warship USS Maddox was patrolling the Gulf of Tonkin, and was attacked by three North Vietnamese torpedo boats. President Johnson responded by saying if it happens again, there will be consequences. Two days later, it was reported that the USS Maddox and the Turner Joy was attacked again. President Johnson responded by bombing Vietnamese ports. He also passed the the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, allowing him to protect the US from the enemy by any means necessary.
Tet is a very important holiday for the Vietnamese people, and the North Vietnamese called for a seven day ceasefire, so everyone can celebrate this special event. The United States agreed, and stood down. After the ceasefire was agreed on and put in place, the North Vietnamese planned and carried out a major offensive involving attacks on major cities, towns, and US bases.
Without the help of the United States, South Vietnam quickly fell to the North, and South Vietnam becomes reunited with the North under communist rule.
Периоды
Negotiations to bring an end to the war started in 1968 and ended in 1973. The United States, the USSR, the North Vietnamese, and the Vietcong all signed an agreement that stated: the US must withdraw all troops from Vietnam, all POWs were to be released, all military activity in Cambodia and Laos were to end, and North and South Vietnam were to continue to be split along the 17th parallel.
Throughout the 60s and 70s anti-war protest was a common thing. Many believed that this is a war to be fought by North and South Vietnamese people, and the United States had no place in it. Protesters would create songs, partake in teach-ins where anti-war activists would meet and discuss, and some would draft dodge, meaning people would flee the US to avoid being conscripted into Vietnam.
