New event
The war began a month after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand who was heir to the Austrian throne at that time
The New Zealand Main Body of 8556 men left New Zealand for Egypt.
A landing was made at what is now known as Anzac Cove.
The newly formed 15,000 New Zealand soldiers were moved to northern France to begin their two and a half year tour of duty in the Western Front trenches.
The British launched a massive attack in the Somme area of Northern France to take pressure off the French Army.
After careful preparation, the attack was launched. The New Zealanders seized the village of Messines on the first day and stopped the countering german forces.
The British mounted another attack, but it was a failure. The usual thorough preparations for an attack weren't complete.
Over the winter of 1917-1918 the New Zealand Division was withdrawn and reinforced.
In late March 1918 the Division was rushed back to the Somme area to help halt a massive German offensive aimed at winning the war before the Americans arrived in strength.
In August 1918, the British launched their last major attack of the war. This period is called the “Hundred Days”, for the three month period when the British forced the Germans into retreat
Finally, the Germans surrender.
New Zealand receives the news of the outbreak of war at 1 p.m. on 5 August (NZ time). It is announced by the Governor, the Earl of Liverpool, on the steps of Parliament to a crowd of 15,000.
The Wellington Battalion captures Chunuk Bair during the Battle of Sari Bair. New Zealand units hold the summit for two days until relieved by British troops.
The first Anzac Day services are held in New Zealand to mark the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. The government had announced the establishment of 'Anzac Day' as a half-day holiday
Following service on Gallipoli, the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade takes part in campaigns against Ottoman froces .They see their first major action near Romani in the Sinai.
