1 янв 2015 г. - James MacMillan - Stabat Mater
Описание:
James MacMillan composed his Stabat Mater in 2015. MacMillan had grown up with the Stabat Mater which is a Latin hymn that has been set to music going back to famous Church composers like Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (MacMillan). This work had a personal connection to MacMillan as his granddaughter had unfortunately passed away due to health complications (Rodriguez). MacMillan states “this is a kind of ultimate, spiritual Kindertotenlied (a song on the death of a child)” which demonstrates this connection (MacMillan). MacMillan says John Studzinski and Harry Christophers were the ones that suggested that he should compose the Stabat Mater (Macmillan).
MacMillan’s version of Stabat Mater has the instrumentation of a choir and string orchestra and its genre is a modern sacred choral work. MacMillan version is a modern approach to an ancient text that also incorporates elements from the Medieval and Renaissance era’s that keeps the distinct dissonance that the Modern era has. An interesting moment is from 12:10 to 15:30 as multiple musical elements can be heard as the change in between harmony and dissonance can be heard as the dynamics are constantly changing from loud to low. The Stabat Mater is very expressive and invites introspection when listened to. The work as a whole correlates to my theme as the musical setting which is the Stabat Mater is about Mary suffering during the crucifixion of Jesus (MacMillan).
