-southern and northern Democrats split over slavery in territories
-Republicans gained support from free soilers that opposed slavery and promoted racial equality
-Lincoln nominated because he was more moderate on slavery and promoted an egalitarian message that won support of ordinary people
-Lincoln was not on the ballot in the Deep South but won most of the northern and western states
-southerners believed slavery was under attack
-Lincoln promised to protect slavery where it already existed but prevent it's expansion
-Lincoln believed in the Union and declared Confederate secession illegal
