In the absence of a monarch, Oliver Cromwell's Puritan regime took power but monarchy was restroed in 1660. Parliament deposed King James II and invited his daughter Mary to take the throne. Kings would rule in cooperation with Parliamentm, guaranteeing that merchant and nobles etc, would enjoy representation in government affairs.
