The act imposed a tax on all printed pieces of paper used by the American colonists, including stamps, almanacs, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, and playing cards. The Stamp Act was enacted to supply funds to pay for the troops stationed along the Appalachian Mountains after the French and Indian War.
