1 март 1856 г. - John Winthrop - A Model of Christian Charity
Описание:
John Winthrop was lawyer who dedicated his life to reforming the church internally. He was the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and he took his time in this role as his opportunity to create the ideal Christian community. This sermon he gave was based off loving your neighbor, giving what you can, and giving your entire self to god. Furthermore stressed the fact that you shouldn't put money over your family or community. This was an individualistic thought for the time period because even though they were trying to support each other as a community they also wanted to keep as much as they could for themselves. This helped to develop a new sense of morality to the American identity.
"Eventually, this little-known sermon acquired the status it has today, as an expression of the ideal suggested by its most resonant phrase 'A city upon a hill'"(Winthrop 102).
