German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, outspoken critic of Hitler's use of the German Church in carrying out the atrocities of the Holocaust, participated in a July 20 assassination attempt. The attempt failed. Bonhoeffer was arrested and consigned to a concentraton camp in Flossenburg, where he was executed just days before Allied forces would liberate the camp.
