1 янв 1550 г. - 1550: Las Casas-Sepülveda debate
Описание:
King Charles V of Spain ordered a group of jurists and theologians to meet at Valladolid to hear arguments about using force against Natives
Juan Ginés Sepülveda: justified violence
- barbaric
- naturally inferior
- Aristotle's theory of natural slavery
- Spanish entitled to punish them for idolatry, sodomy, and cannibalism
- oppression and murder within Native communities
- war is the lesser of 2 evils: war vs allowing human sacrifice
- necessary for conversion
Bartolomé de Las Casas: opposed violence
- civilized communities
- strict social laws
- beautiful and highly intricate language
- outside god's word, Spain cannot punish them
- conversion vs killing
- "how could God have commanded his church to kill pagans in war in order to save them from their ignorance"
Las Casas momentarily stopped the encomienda (system where Native workers were allocated to Spanish settlers and instructed in the Christian faith in return for their labor)
Natives did not benefit
