Was launched in 1957 as the world's first space satellite. It was part of Nikita Khrushchev's plan to boost the economic competitiveness of the Soviet Union by putting emphasis on technological research. It was used as part of the Battle of Ideas against the U.S which brought victory to the Soviet Union bd embarrassment to the U.S.
