Although Josephus dates Herod's victory in July 37 BCE, he fixes the beginning of his effective reign in 36 BCE, as he states that Herod ended a Hasmonean era started 126 years earlier (Jewish Antiquities XIV:490). However, as he dates the beginning of the period in 162 BCE the reign of Herod started therefore in -36 (= -162 + 126).
