Описание:

Second Battle of Mount Hermon
The Second Battle of Mount Hermon, fought on October 8, 1973, during the Yom Kippur War, pitted the Syrian Army against the Israeli Army. Following the capture of the IDF outpost on Mount Hermon by Syria on October 6, Israel launched a counterattack, which the Syrians successfully repelled, holding the position until October 21.

Background
On October 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a war against Israel, which had occupied the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights since the Six-Day War. As part of the Syrian assault, a commando force captured the Israeli outpost on Mount Hermon.

Prelude
Syrian Preparations
After securing the Hermon outpost on October 7, the Syrian 82nd Paratroop Battalion fortified their position, anticipating an Israeli counterattack. They set up blocking positions, deployed mines, and positioned anti-aircraft and recoilless guns.

Israeli Decision to Attack
The Israeli Northern Command, led by General Yitzhak Hofi, decided to recapture the Hermon for moral and strategic reasons. Golani Brigade commander Amir Drori planned a hasty counterattack, involving the 51st and 17th Battalions, with limited intelligence on Syrian defenses.

Battle
The Israeli forces advanced toward the Hermon under heavy Syrian artillery fire. The 51st Battalion climbed the ridge, engaging in a prolonged battle with the Syrian 183rd Commando Battalion. Despite initial setbacks and casualties, the Israelis captured high point 1614 but had to retreat due to heavy resistance and lack of coordination.

Simultaneously, the 17th Battalion advanced along the road, encountering minefields and Syrian ambushes. The Syrians inflicted heavy casualties, stopping the Israeli advance. Drori's forces faced intense sniper and RPG fire, forcing a retreat under the cover of fog.

Aftermath
Israel failed to recapture the Hermon outpost, suffering 23 killed and 55 wounded. The Syrian forces also incurred significant casualties but maintained control until Israel's successful Operation Dessert on October 22.
