1 янв 1990 г. - The founding of the FIDA

Описание:

Palestinian Democratic Union (FIDA; Arabic: الاتحاد الديمقراطي الفلسطيني Al-Ittihad al-Dimuqrati al-Filastini) is a minor Palestinian political party active in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).

History:
FIDA was formed in the early 1990s as a splinter group from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) due to disagreements over policies related to Jordan, the Oslo peace process, and the First Intifada. It formally adopted its political program in September 1991 and rebranded as the Palestinian Democratic Union – FIDA in April 1993.

Organization:
FIDA’s youth wing is the Independence Youth Union (Arabic: اتحاد شباب الاستقلال Athad Shebab Alasetqelal). It also has workers' and women's groups but does not possess an armed wing.

Beliefs and Ideology:
FIDA’s slogan is "freedom, independence, return, democracy, and socialism." It presents itself as a progressive, secular, and democratic socialist party, advocating for a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state. The party supports Marxist principles of "scientific socialism" and has taken a more moderate stance compared to the DFLP, seeking to establish itself as a left-wing democratic alternative in Palestinian politics. Notably, FIDA leader Mamduh Nofal signed a 2002 appeal to cease suicide bombings.

Leadership:
FIDA was founded by Yasser Abd Rabbo, who later left the party in 2002 amid internal disputes. He was succeeded by Saleh Ra'fat, the current Secretary-General. Other significant leaders include Zahira Kamal, Azmi ash-Shu'aybi, and Mamduh Nofal.

Electoral Participation:
FIDA holds 21 seats in the PLO's Palestine National Council (PNC), elected as DFLP delegates. The party won one seat in the 1996 Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) elections through Fatah’s backing, held by Azmi ash-Shu'aybi. In the January 2006 PLC elections, FIDA, as part of the al-Badeel (Alternative) list with DFLP and the Palestinian People's Party (PPP), received 2.8% of the vote and secured two PLC seats. FIDA is also participating in the 2021 Palestinian legislative elections on a joint list with PPP called "United Left," led by Fadwa Khader.
