11 июл 1967 г. - Battle of Rumani Coast
Описание:
The Battle of Rumani Coast, known in Hebrew as קרב רומני (Krav Rumani), was a naval engagement that occurred on the night of July 11, 1967, between Israeli and Egyptian naval forces near Rumani. During the battle, two Egyptian motor torpedo boats were sunk without any Israeli losses.
Background:
Following Israel's victory in the Six-Day War, the country significantly expanded its coastline to include the Sinai Peninsula. To assert and enforce sovereignty over this newly acquired territory, the Israeli Navy began regular patrols along the Sinai coast, extending up to the approaches of Port Said.
Battle:
On July 9, INS Eilat, an ex-British Royal Navy Z-class destroyer commanded by Yitzhak Shushan, set sail westward toward the Sinai coast. INS Eilat rendezvoused with ex-French motor torpedo boats Aya and Daya, forming a flotilla tasked with patrolling and intercepting vessels crossing the demarcation line towards the Sinai coast.
On the night of July 11, around 21:45, the signals intelligence intercept operator on Eilat detected two Egyptian missile boats preparing to sortie. The Israeli torpedo boats soon picked up these Egyptian vessels on radar. The Egyptians were approximately 15 miles from the MTBs and 12 miles from Eilat, moving east at 15 knots (17 mph; 28 km/h). The Israeli forces adjusted their course to intercept, with Eilat approaching from the north and Aya and Daya from the east.
The Egyptian vessels, identified as P 6-class torpedo boats, detected the approaching Israeli MTBs and opened fire. The Israelis responded with Bofors and Oerlikons. Although the initial exchange of fire did not score any direct hits, the Egyptian boats dispersed. This separation allowed Eilat to engage one Egyptian boat, while Aya and Daya targeted the other. Approximately twenty minutes later, both Egyptian torpedo boats were ablaze, with their torpedoes exploding due to the fire. There were no Israeli casualties, and no known Egyptian survivors were reported.
The engagement demonstrated the effectiveness of Israeli naval tactics and the coordination between their naval assets, leading to a decisive victory with no losses on the Israeli side.
