Hamas is a Palestinian Sunni Islamist group governing the Gaza Strip since 2007. Founded in 1987 by Ahmed Yassin during the First Intifada, it emerged from the Muslim Brotherhood's 1973 charity. After winning the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections, Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007 from Fatah, leading to an Israeli-Egyptian blockade and several conflicts with Israel, including wars in 2008-09, 2012, 2014, and 2021. The 2023 war began with a surprise Hamas attack on Israel, resulting in significant casualties and an ongoing Israeli invasion of Gaza.

Initially seeking to replace Israel with a Palestinian state over all of Mandatory Palestine, Hamas later accepted 1967 borders in its 2017 charter but still does not recognize Israel. While Hamas has offered long-term truce proposals based on 1967 borders, its ultimate goal remains the establishment of a Palestinian state over the entire former Mandatory Palestine. The group's stance on Israel has evolved, and it has been involved in numerous violent conflicts with Israel. Hamas is designated a terrorist organization by many countries, including the U.S. and EU.
