Willful Ignorance is Blissful Only in the Mind of a Remarkable Fool

Belief is a very powerful feeling. It has driven man to wage wars against fellow man, it divides and conquers, it drives people mad, and it is incredibly difficult to get someone to waver on or question, much less change, their beliefs. Some are indoctrinated from a very young age. Some are learned over time through personal experiences that confirm to the believer what they see as truth.

We are currently living in a defining age, as so many ages that came before have been. An age where many precedents will be set and many of the old ways will crumble under the ever mounting pressure to change and move forward. The only constant is change after all. Many of these changes will be marvelous and groundbreaking for the future in so many facets of life. Some of them will also be dangerous and have already proven to be.

The current climate is calling for those who are accused of any misdeed to be judged as guilty before proven innocent and essentially hung out to dry whilst the facts and fictions are sorted out. The problems here are several. Firstly to believe on blind faith is a dangerous road to travel and harkens back to the days of literal witch hunts and believe as I say or else mentalities that don’t feel very progressive at all. In fact regressive is the thought that seems most appropriate. The other complication is that the facts become lost in the fray, and even if the original event is proven untrue it has already caused such a frenzy that many will remain unaware of the ultimate outcome. Thirdly, people do not want to have their beliefs challenged. Once it has been said it is so and nothing can or will change their minds.

There are people that, even in the face irrefutable evidence and fact, will continue to lock down on their outdated or flat out wrong belief simply because they refuse to be shaken from their foundations. This is probably the scariest form of rejecting fact for preference because they are literally saying, “I don’t care what the truth is, what I believe is more important.” This is truly foolishness on a remarkable level.

Amber Heard accused Johnny Depp of domestic violence and the crowd went wild. I’m not going to rehash the whole thing because everyone already knows how it went. Armed with a plethora of evidence and two lawsuits seeking to rehabilitate his image and good standing amongst the human race, Johnny Depp has been fighting what at times seems like an untriumphable war. Thanks to the believe all women mantra, the fact that the original allegations made such a splash, his evidence and ongoing attempts to publicize it being largely ignored by the mainstream media, and the beliefs of people who need him to be guilty no matter what; it has been a struggle for him to overturn that original media lambasting at the hands of professional liar, fraud, and con artist Amber Heard. Yes, the audio tapes did help to win over a large amount of the public, but social media seems damned to remain in the dark ages and that’s something that ultimately may just have to be accepted and left to stew in its own excretions.

Yesterday I saw a comment under a Perez Hilton article that read, “She said she was abused… why would she lie?” Well, for a multitude of reasons. Money, fame, career advancement; because she’s a soulless bloodsucking predator who gets high on torturing people for pure sport… I digress. It goes without saying that this person completely ignored the contents of the article, which was about more of Johnny Depp’s evidence, and went directly to that thought. Many people tried to educate her on the situation but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears as she hasn’t responded to anyone that I’ve seen. This person could have simply read what was there for the taking and made a more informed comment but her belief got in the way. That feeling that women are purely angelic beings who do no harm unto anyone stopped her from being able to see clearly what was spelled out right in front of her in block letters. That is a pure denial of reality, like telling someone the sky is blue and having them look you in the eye and declare that it’s red. This happens again and again with people who just either cannot be bothered to read or cannot be bothered to think.

Another tactic I see quite often are people who like to espouse statistics in an attempt to prove their point. You can find statistics slanted in any flavor you like so I really put little faith in them but secondarily, they are a tool to be applied as an overall glance at a specific subject not the end all and be all for every single case. You simply cannot take this instance where the proof is overwhelmingly one sided and say, “but the statistics say women don’t lie.” That makes you look illogical and uneducated. You’re conceding that you’re only willing to cite a blanket statement instead of analyzing the individual attributes of the situation at hand to satisfy your own need to feel right. There are those pesky feelings again.

You can easily find statistics that say men are abused in higher numbers by their intimate partners but that would be inconvenient for them so they are ignored. All that matters is what they hold dear to themselves and everything else be damned. Being ignorant is not so much a shame, as being unwilling to learn. These people are most certainly not willing to learn. They surround themselves with like hive minded people and never leave the cacophony of their own biases and beliefs. The advent of social media has allowed for this to flourish and go unchallenged but that’s a topic for another day. It’s dangerous and God forbid anyone do try and confront them it’s a system overload and complete core meltdown. They will screech at you and dogmatize their views before hitting you with the almighty *block* so you can never infiltrate their comfort zone again. It’s quite a shame honestly, ideas are meant to be debated but these people are obviously happy in their resonators.

If you believe Amber Heard at this point it’s because you fall into one of the above categories. One has a built in excuse as the media has done a less than shoddy job of reporting how the case has unfolded but the other two are just plain willful ignorance at it’s best. Trolling is it’s own form of ignorance and I won’t justify it as anything other than. If you go out of your way to knowingly spread misinformation you are no better than the media who are not doing their job at all. In fact, it’s worse because you’re twisting the facts into such an unrecognizable form in order to support your narrative that I truly think you should seek help for as to why you feel the need to do so and lie to people. It honestly reminds me of Amber Heard herself in many ways so maybe the old birds of a feather adage applies here too. People getting off on doing things that they know are wrong. Food for thought.

In 13 days the trial for the libel suit against The Sun tabloid begins. I hope that between now and the end of it so much evidence is exposed that the media and those who have buried themselves in spider holes can’t ignore the truth any longer. I hope that when someone tries to label Johnny Depp as a wife beater they are inundated with indisputable facts to the contrary. I hope he is awarded many millions more than he’s asking for and I hope that he gets to slay this demon twice and take her on personally in the defamation suit in Virginia. I hope that he achieves the exoneration he so deserves but mostly I hope that he is satisfied with whatever the outcomes may be, and that he is at peace with it all in the end.
