The Evacuation of Dunkirk, or Operation Dynamo, was a critical military operation during World War II that took place from 26 May to 4 June 1940. Over 338,000 Allied soldiers, trapped on the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk in northern France by German forces during the Battle of France, were evacuated. The British Expeditionary Force, along with French and Belgian troops, had been pushed back to Dunkirk. The evacuation was carried out by a diverse fleet of over 800 vessels, including military and civilian boats. Some soldiers embarked directly onto larger ships from the harbour, while others were ferried from the beaches by a flotilla of smaller vessels, known as the Little Ships of Dunkirk. This operation, often referred to as the Miracle of Dunkirk, allowed a significant number of Allied troops to escape and continue the fight.
