5 ноя 1956 г. - Battle of Port Said

Описание:

The Battle of Port Said took place during the Suez Crisis, with the UK's goal of seizing control of the Suez Canal, a vital trade route in Egypt.

In 1922, Egypt gained formal independence from the UK, but British influence remained strong with troops stationed in the country. Until 1956, the Suez Canal was managed by the Suez Canal Company, primarily owned by France. Tensions rose when the UK and the US refused to finance Egypt’s Aswan High Dam due to Egypt’s ties with the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia. In 1956, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal, declaring martial law and quickly taking control.

On 29 October 1956, Israeli forces invaded Egypt, advancing towards the Suez Canal and defeating Egyptian forces in several battles. Following this, Britain and France demanded that Israeli and Egyptian troops withdraw from the canal, stating they would intervene to enforce a UN-ordered ceasefire if the demands were not met. When both countries refused, British and French forces landed at Port Said and Port Fuad on 5-6 November, occupying the canal zone.

The invasion faced significant international opposition, particularly from the United States and within Britain and France. Fears of Soviet intervention increased tensions. On 22 December, under UN pressure, British and French troops withdrew from Egypt, with Israeli forces following in March 1957. The operation, aimed at controlling the Suez Canal, ended in a political debacle for the UK and France.
