16 окт 1935 г. - Cement Incident
Описание:
The Cement Incident occurred on October 16, 1935, in Jaffa, Palestine, when Arab dockers discovered guns and ammunition hidden in drums labeled as cement. This consignment, from the Belgian ship Leopold II, included 25 machine guns, 800 rifles, and 400,000 rounds of ammunition, destined for a Jewish merchant in Tel Aviv. Despite the discovery, no arrests were made due to the inability to identify the merchant or final destination. This event escalated tensions, leading to widespread protests across major Arab cities and violent reactions, including a general strike in Jaffa.
The incident underscored fears of Jewish armament through the Haganah and fueled Arab fears of Jewish ambitions in Palestine. This contributed to the rise of Sheikh Izz ad-Din al-Qassam, who advocated armed resistance against British forces and Jewish settlers, culminating in his death and a significant funeral that galvanized Palestinian nationalist sentiment. This event is linked to the broader context of escalating tensions that eventually led to the Arab Revolt of 1936-1939.
