Jericho, located in the West Bank, serves as the administrative seat of the Jericho Governorate in Palestine. It is situated in the Jordan Valley, bordered by the Jordan River to the east and Jerusalem to the west. As of 2017, Jericho had a population of 20,907. The city is one of the oldest in the world and features the oldest known defensive wall. Archaeological findings show over 20 settlements dating back to 9000 BCE. Jericho was also designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historically, it was controlled by Jordan from 1949 to 1967 and has been under Israeli occupation since 1967. Administrative control was transferred to the Palestinian Authority in 1994.
