The Battles of the Sinai were a series of military engagements between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Egyptian Army during the Israeli Operation Horev in December 1948 – January 1949. Following their success in the Battle of Bir 'Asluj and the Battle of 'Auja, IDF forces under Yigal Allon's Southern Command pushed into the Sinai Peninsula. On December 28, the Negev and 8th Brigades captured Umm Katef and Abu Ageila, key positions about 25km inside Egyptian territory, and continued north towards al-Arish with plans to encircle the Egyptian forces in Palestine and conclude the war.

Despite achieving tactical advances, Israeli forces were ordered to retreat from Sinai on January 2, 1949, due to political and diplomatic pressures. A further attempt to encircle Egyptian forces occurred on January 3 in the Battle of Rafah, but Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion ordered a withdrawal, ending military actions in the war. This series of battles marked the first significant Israeli military operations in Sinai, setting the stage for future conflicts in the region, including the 1956 Suez War and the 1967 Six-Day War.
