HOMESTEAD ACT
- Used to promote national economic development and settle the West
- Granted 160 acres of land to any person who would farm it for at least five years
- This "free-soil" proposal was passed when Southern Dems. weren't part of Congress

MORRILL LAND GRANT ACT
- Goal to promote secondary education
- Federal govt. granted land to the states that they could sell to raise money for "land grant" colleges, which would focus on science, engineering, agriculture, and other practical skills
- Helped to establish more than 70 instututions
