Operation Gideon was a Haganah offensive executed by the Golani Brigade from May 10-15, 1948, aimed at capturing Beisan (Beit She'an), clearing surrounding villages and Bedouin camps, and blocking potential routes for Transjordanian forces. This operation was part of Plan Dalet, linked to the 1947 UN Partition Plan which allocated Beisan to the proposed Jewish state. The offensive resulted in the town's surrender, with most residents fleeing and the remainder, primarily Christians, relocated to Nazareth. Commanded by Avraham Yoffe, the operation involved initial captures and the strategic use of threats to secure the town's capitulation.

Post-operation, the town saw significant destruction, leading to controversies within the Israeli leadership about the extent and motives behind such actions. The aftermath also included the establishment of a ma'abarah for North African immigrants in Beit She'an, which later evolved into a development town.
