Haganah, founded in 1920, was the main Zionist paramilitary organization during the British Mandate for Palestine, tasked with defending Jewish settlements against Arab attacks. This role was highlighted during events like the Nebi Musa riots in 1920, the Jaffa riots of 1921 and 1936, the 1929 Palestine riots, and the 1936–1939 Arab revolt. Controlled by the Jewish Agency, Haganah adhered to a policy of moderation and self-restraint until World War II, which led to the breakaway of more radical groups like Irgun and Lehi.

During World War II, Haganah received clandestine military support from Poland and cooperated with the United Kingdom, forming the elite Palmach force in 1941 to prepare for potential Axis invasions. Post-war, Haganah led a Jewish insurgency against British immigration restrictions, participating in actions against British infrastructure and supporting illegal Jewish immigration.

Following the 1947 UN Partition Plan for Palestine, Haganah became a public force, leading Jewish defenses in the ensuing civil war. It was formally disbanded in 1948, transitioning into the core of the newly established Israel Defense Forces following Israeli independence.
