19 апр 1917 г. - Second Battle of Gaza
Описание:
The Second Battle of Gaza, occurring from April 17 to 19, 1917, was a significant confrontation during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of World War I. The battle followed the inconclusive First Battle of Gaza in March and was marked by the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF)'s attempt to break through the fortified Ottoman defenses at Gaza. The Ottoman Army, having reinforced its positions following the first battle, was well-entrenched with substantial fortifications extending from Gaza to Beersheba.
The EEF, under the command of Lieutenant General Charles Dobell, launched an offensive with three infantry divisions supported by two mounted divisions. Despite this, the strength of the Ottoman defenses, coupled with their strategic artillery placements, inflicted severe casualties on the attacking forces. The EEF's approach, primarily frontal assaults against well-prepared positions, led to high losses and ultimately, the failure to achieve significant breakthroughs.
The battle's outcome was a defeat for the EEF, contrasting with earlier successes at Romani, Magdhaba, and Rafa, which had pushed the Ottoman forces eastwards. The high casualties and failure to secure Gaza were setbacks that influenced subsequent military strategies in the region. The battle underscored the challenges of overcoming entrenched positions and highlighted the need for revised tactics in the campaign's later stages.
